The Evolution of Excellence
Lakewood Country Club’s rich history is a testament to our enduring excellence. Born from humble beginnings in 1905 with a nine-hole golf course featuring dirt fairways and sandy greens, we expanded in 1908 with the acquisition of surrounding farmland. By 1910 the course had grown to 18 holes, featuring grass greens and fairways.
In 1913, the Clubhouse was rebuilt, aligning with golf's growing popularity in the United States and solidifying Lakewood Country Club as a premier destination for the sport. The momentum continued throughout the Roaring Twenties when the Club flourished as the premier social circle for Denver’s prominent figures.
The Clubhouse underwent major renovations throughout the 20th century, including a remodel in 1986 that added a second story with breathtaking mountain views. A meticulous renovation was completed in 2008 in honor of our centennial, incorporating a refreshed pool and fitness center, and today, our revitalized Clubhouse stands as a modern hallmark of our enduring legacy. In 2017, our golf course also underwent restoration to its 1916 grandeur, reflecting the pioneering spirit of our Founders and offering an unparalleled experience for our Members.
Legendary Golf
The Origins of a Classic Course
Lakewood Country Club’s course stands as a living tribute to the rich evolution of American golf architecture. Established in 1908, our original course was crafted by prominent American golf course architect Tom Bendelow.
In 1916, under the guidance of Donald Ross — a pivotal figure in the Golden Age of golf architecture— the course was infused with classic Scottish design elements, including strategic bunkering, undulating greens, and intricate risk-and-reward scenarios, transforming Lakewood into one of only four Ross-designed courses in Colorado.
The 21st century ushered in a renewed appreciation for the Golden Age’s artful design, and in 2017, the course was restored under the guidance of Gil Hanse, designer of the Rio 2016 Olympic golf course.
Today, our course merges time-honored heritage with contemporary flair. The legacy of golf icons like Mildred "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias, who have graced our fairways, coupled with the course’s rich architectural past, continues to inspire and attract golfers who value both tradition and excellence in the game.

Known for our community of scratch and plus handicap golfers, we also readily welcome new Members at all levels as part of our shared passion for the greatest game.
Our legendary Par 71, 18-hole layout — carefully restored by Gil Hanse to reflect Donald Ross’s iconic Golden Age design — offers contemporary challenges for modern players. Named one of the PGA’s ‘Best in the West’ and proudly ranked among the PGA's Top 100 courses, golfers of all skill levels can pursue the perfect swing while enjoying friendly competition and authentic connection.

Parents adore the perfect evening escape during our "First Fridays" Parents Night Out, unwinding with live music while their children enjoy dinner, crafts, movies, and games in a safe and engaging environment.
Our Junior Golf Program and Summer Swim Team reflect Lakewood’s dedication to developing young talent and promoting sportsmanship. The Junior Golf Program offers fun, lasting friendships, and skill-building from June to July. The Summer Swim Team provides a lively space for young athletes to excel, with optional group or private lessons available on request.
